On 18th of September our foreign secretary left for US to address the General Debate of the 77th UNGA under the theme of “A watershed moment: transformative solutions to interlocking challenges”. 1. Gratitude’s for vaccine help

Foreign secretary of Nepal Mr. Bharat Raj Paudyal thanked India and China for Vaccine help during COVID-19 Pandemic. Yes we are thankful to the nation that have helped us during pandemic and helped us to save live. No matter whose contribution was there the priority at that time was to save lives.

2. Indirectly Seeked help for our Economic Recovery

Nepal’s hard-earned development gains are at risk, the foreign secretary says. He calls for additional international support, particularly investments, technology transfer, aid for trade, and technical assistance. Calls for reform of the international financial architecture so that it is inclusive, fair, and equally beneficial to all. Post-pandemic recovery cost is expected to be $19 billion.

3. Climate Change and Carbon Emission

Climate change needs global action, he stressed, calling on large emitters, which account for over 80 percent of all global emissions, to take bold steps to keep the 1.5°C climate goal alive. $100 billion in climate financing must turn into a reality, he said.

4. Disarmament of Weapons of Mass Destructions

Nepal is hosting the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific. He called for the complete and timebound disarmament of all weapons of mass destruction. Global military spending was $2 trillion in 2021, he said.

5. Buddha and Nepal

What left out in his speech?

Boarder dispute that are currently going out between India and Nepal. India foreign minister Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar rightly raised the issue related to Pakistan in context of US helping Pakistan in F16 upgradation. We have talked about Israel & Palestine, Russia and Ukraine but failed to address and raise our own issue.

Conclusion

Our foreign policy must need some observation, on what ground we are seating and what we need. Silent is not an answer always, we have to speak about our problems. If we are unable to speak today we will not be able to speak later. Late reactions are not always respected especially in geopolitics.
